The City of Stamford has begun development of a traffic calming master plan for all of its residential neighborhoods. Once developed, this plan will show street improvements that can help slow speeds through neighborhoods, reduce cut-through traffic, and better manage traffic. The plan will create a multimodal environment where pedestrians, vehicles, and bicycles can coexist.     The master plan is being developed through a highly dynamic and interactive process in which the City’s residents come together to voice their opinions. Residents engage in a series of hands-on workshops (or charrettes) where they discuss the values they wish to be exemplified by their neighborhood, the traffic-related problems that they wish to resolve, and the possible solutions for these problems. The input obtained from the residents provides the framework for the project team, led by Urban Engineers, Inc., to complete the master plan.     Similar processes have already proven successful on individual streets, neighborhoods, or groups of neighborhoods. However, these smaller scale projects often ignore areas within the same municipality that are also in need of traffic calming. In some situations, localized traffic calming projects simply move problems such as speeding and cut through traffic from one neighborhood to another. The comprehensive approach towards traffic calming adopted by the City of Stamford will allow the City to avoid this and ensure safer, friendlier, and quieter roads throughout the entire City. |
